2609 Set of 6 Antique Oak Dining Chairs
A superb and unusual set of six mid-19th century oak dining chairs by J. Murray of London, dating to circa 1850.
A particularly attractive quality set with an impressive amount of decorative detail throughout. Each chair is stamped 'J Murray' to the underside, providing a lovely identifiable maker's detail.
The chair backs feature distinctive arched sunburst crests above decorative galleried upper rails.
The shaped stiles have scalloped detailing, carved circular floral motifs and arched tops, while the lower back rails incorporate further carved arched decoration and moulded detailing.
The chairs have generously proportioned, curved-front seats which have been later upholstered in a subtle pale striped fabric with decorative edging.
Below, the front legs feature stepped square blocks leading into beautifully turned and fluted supports and castors. The rear legs are gently splayed, completing the elegant period design.
The oak has developed a lovely warm colour and patina which highlights the carved and turned detailing beautifully.
An impressive and increasingly unusual matching set of six chairs, ideal for pairing with a large antique dining table and particularly well suited to a traditional, period or country-house interior.
